Speaker Series
Oct.

6:00 p.m.18:00

Speaker Series

The intent of the lecture series is to discuss how design is not just a singular product output but a way of thinking and doing. It can be used as a form of embodied learning to understand or move through processes and situating that help us understand context. Both of these are relevant as we begin to increase the use of design for complex systems questions and explore potential futures.

Speakers:

Dr. Isabel Prochner (she/they) is an industrial designer and design researcher guided by design justice principles. Her research and practice focus on socially and community-engaged industrial design. She is an editor of Situating Design in Alberta, a book published with the University of Alberta Press in 2021 that makes the case that design has the potential to drive economic growth, improve quality of life, and promote sustainability in the province and across the country. Much of her research explores sex and gender equity in design. Her second book Designing for Sex and Gender Equity is in press with Routledge, and she has American and Canadian patents pending for a chest binder for transgender and gender-diverse folks.

Prochner is a faculty member in the Virginia Tech School of Design in the USA. She completed her master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Montreal and holds a Bachelor of Design in Industrial design from the University of Alberta.

Chris Perron is a Senior Product Designer at the LEGO Group with over 7 years of experience designing products and play experiences with LEGO Bricks.

Since graduating from the Industrial Design program at the University of Alberta in 2014, Chris continues to explore the LEGO system of play with designs that use LEGO bricks in inventive and creative combinations. During his time at the LEGO Group, he has worked on over 50 products that span a wide variety of themes and franchises: from spaceships to monsters to mechs and fantasy locations. Chris' favorite projects to work on are those where he can combine interesting LEGO geometry, beautiful color combinations, and favorite movies like the recent product The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell.

Outside of work Chris continues to build LEGO models for fun as well as pursue his passion of 3D modeling & digital sculpting by working in a combination of Blender & ZBrush. Chris lives in Denmark with his wife Laura and their many outdoor cats.

Laura Perron is a Product Designer at the LEGO Group with over 6 years of experience designing products and play experiences with LEGO bricks.

Since graduating from the Industrial Design program at the University of Alberta in 2016, Laura continues to seek out opportunities to craft joyful experiences through product design. In her time at the LEGO Group, she has played an integral role in shaping the tone-of-voice for the new line of products that appeal to those with a passion for arts & crafts, colors, and decorating (LEGO DOTS). Since 2022 Laura has been a part of the LEGO IDEAS team, where she was able to work on her dream project of converting the US comedy classic "The Office" into a LEGO product. Laura's favorite projects to work on are ones where she can combine interesting color patterns, create something silly, or capture the essence of a beloved TV or movie in LEGO brick form.

Outside of work Laura pursues her passion of art through watercolor & digital painting, 3D modeling in Blender, and sewing elaborate Halloween costumes. Laura lives in Denmark with her husband Chris and their many outdoor cats.

Working Class Edmonton Built Heritage Tour

The buildings that Edmontonians see every day embody the stories of working people - people whose lives and contributions are not remembered. This tour features buildings and major infrastructure projects that reveal the issues of the day affecting working families in the ever-changing economy of Edmonton.

We will hear about attitudes towards women’s work, early workforces and unions, the General Strike of 1919, and relief work provided by governments in the 1930s. The General Hospital, Holy Child School (formerly Grandin School), the High Level Bridge, the Alberta Legislature, and the baseball park are the sites of these stories.

The tour starts at the General Hospital on Jasper Avenue and 111 Street, and ends at the east end of the Legislature grounds. The round trip, if returning to the General Hospital site, is 2.2 km.

Each participant will receive a free copy of ALHI’s newest booklet Edmonton Working Class Heritage Buildings. The booklet covers many more sites of significance that participants can explore on their own.

The tour will be led by Cathy Roy, a retired museum curator and fourth-generation settler in central Edmonton.

The Government Centre LRT station, west exit, is the closest access to the General Hospital. This walking tour is for anyone over 12 years of age interested in Edmonton history who is capable of walking up to 2km.

hcma Watch and Wine

Join us for happy hour at hcma's interdisciplinary design studio and an informal Watch & Wine screening of our The Space Between video series, including a sneak peek at season two. You'll also get to meet the team, see the space, and learn more about projects in the works.

This event is free and all are welcome.

The Space Between

For some time now, we've been talking about The Space Between: the humble, sometimes overlooked, in-between spaces, where spontaneous connections occur. The conversation held with a stranger while watching a game, the coffee shared between neighbours, the mentorship provided to someone learning a new skill. This is where the magic happens.

After 40 years, we have heard a lot of stories emphasizing the importance of these spaces. With The Space Between video series, we're sharing them – giving you a look inside some of our favourite community buildings to hear about moments of community and connection.

hcma

hcma designs buildings, brands, and shared experiences that connect people. We’re interdisciplinary by design. Designers, architects, researchers, strategists, all working together to create the lasting change we want to see in the world.

Speaker 1 - Hannah Allawi (Architecture)

Presentation Name: STRATHCONA, EDMONTON: MODERN, INDUSTRIAL

Description: Hannah Allawi is a registered Intern Architect with the AAA and NCARB and has over 7 years of professional experience. She has worked in Canada, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and has completed Internships in the UK, UAE and Japan. Hannah’s recent PhD from the School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape at the University of Calgary focused primarily on the research of using augmented reality technology in helping to revive lost buildings and structures of the UAE, utilizing the city of Abu Dhabi as a testing ground. Her current research work primarily revolves around architecture and urbanism of cities in the Arab Gulf States as well as urban design enhancements within the public realm.

A few buildings will be showcased allowing to present their architectural features as part of the modern architectural typology. The Pecha Kucha presentation sets to ignite interest and appreciation of these buildings as well as keeping a look out for other unique structures around Edmonton.

Speaker 2 - Raeland Mendoza (Fashion & Design)

Brand: www.illcallyoutomorrow.com/ Agency: www.tomorrow-works.com/

Presentation Name: I’ll Call you Tomorrow / Tomorrow Works

Description: Coming from a lineage of immigrant textile artisans, he has lived in the world of fashion since birth. This was honed studying textiles and marketing in university, with his early career leading him to work on product with Canadian west coast staple brands CYC Design Corporation (Reigning Champ, wings + horns), and Kit and Ace while living in Vancouver. Spurred by the idleness of his suburban roots in Edmonton contrasted with the childhood experiences of growing up in Toronto, he seeks to bring his communities with him in every new endeavor.

Now working alongside a creative network across Canada, the US, and Asia, Raeland consults for a multitude of lifestyle brands across different spaces, while also leading the art collective/lifestyle brand I’ll Call You Tomorrow (ICYT) and its consultancy counterpart, Tomorrow Works.

Speaker 3 - Shawna Lemay (Photography)

Transactions with Beauty - http://transactionswithbeauty.com/

Presentation Name:A Tale of Three Cities, Meld – Pecha Kucha, Edmonton Design Week 2023

Description: Shawna Lemay is a writer inspired by photography and art. Her books have hit Harper’s Bazaar’s must-read list and the Globe and Mail’s must-read fashion books list. Actor Bella Heathcote recognized her latest novel, Everything Affects Everyone by saying: “Shawna Lemay’s writing makes the miraculous accessible and the mundane seem magical.”

Shawna’s city photography is inspired by artist Edward Hopper’s observation, “There is a sort of elation about sunlight on the upper part of a house.” When travel plans were cancelled, she took to the streets of Edmonton seeing it as a tourist might, through love-coloured glasses, hoping to tell the story of light in our city. Her city photography has taken her from the popularity of an image of the Taco Time in Edmonton’s winter, to spending a month in Rome taking photographs, to being asked to travel to Porto Alegre, Brazil to photograph that city. As the images from each city merge and flow into her consciousness she asks, how does seeing a photograph of a city change how we see ourselves in a city?

Speaker 4 - (Juan Monterrosa - Familia Brewing)

Presentation Name: Brewing Vibrancy and the first law of thermodynamics.

Juan's upbringing trace back to rural Alberta, but his spirit is an explorer. His greatest muse is the exploration of new horizons, particularly the vibrant pulse of cities and oceans. Making the cityscape of Vancouver his home for 10 years, where the ocean met the mountains, he experienced the creativity and vibrancy that can be seen around the city.

But life is an ever-evolving masterpiece, and Juan has made a transformation. While he is a seasoned engineer with experience in sustainable building design and Municipal leadership, he's recently embarked on an exhilarating adventure. He's now the owner of Familia Brewing. Familia embodies the essence of his heritage, creating vibrant spaces and a passion for crafting easy-drinking beers with funky small batches.

Juan's journey is a testament to the fusion of heritage, engineering precision, and a vibrant artistic spirit. He looks to invite people explore the vivid world he's trying to craft at his brewery, where every sip of his beer tells a story, and every corner invites you open up to new experiences.

MBAC

MBAC is an architecture and design firm founded by Marc Boutin in 1997 and headquartered in Calgary.

We work at multiple scales and in a wide variety of physical and conceptual contexts, but always with the objective of developing robust and resilient designs that can adapt to their environments as they evolve.

We commit to designing holistically because we believe the world can only be understood as a whole; consequently, we focus on creating a density of meaning that emerges through the synthesis of art, architecture, urban design, and landscape design.

Marc Boutin, Architect, AAA, AIBC, FRAIC, RCA

Marc founded MBAC in 1997 and as of 2023 leads the firm’s Nelson office. In his capacity as Director of Design Development, Marc supports each of the firm’s projects from conceptualization through to delivery, helping to translate design intentions into programmatic, material, and tectonic strategies towards design excellence.

Marc is a Registered Architect in Alberta and British Columbia, a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

Richard Cotter, Architect, AAA, MRAIC

Richard joined MBAC in 2012 and became an Associate in 2020. Richard has contributed to a broad range of projects in the office, including the Edmonton Valley Zoo Children's Precinct, the Civic District Public Realm Strategy, the Ortona Armoury Rehabilitation, the Blood Tribe Comprehensive Community Plan, and the Rossdale Power Plant Advanced Assessment and Priority Rehabilitation.

Richard is a Registered Architect in Alberta and a Member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

Whether we are advertising to consumers, or creating an app for users, our approach is fundamentally human-centric.

We’ll walk through our processes for connecting with people, designing systems and marketing that solves consumer problems, and doing it all in a way that looks great – ultimately making products that have creative influence in the real world.

INSITU: The Galleria

Come take a tour of an Edmonton architectural gem, the Galleria. The Galleria is an exceptional example of “missing-middle” housing designed by celebrated Canadian architects John and Patricia Patkau. This 6-storey building clusters dynamic 2-story units around a lush tropical atrium, offering residents year-round greenery and warmth through Edmonton’s harsh winters: a bold vision that reflects the optimism and abundance of Alberta’s 1970s boom years. It is a rare multi-generational community, with children through to people in their 80s, and it offers a compelling high-density alternative to the soulless apartment towers that continue to be built across Canada.

This building walkthrough will take guests on a rare tour of the interior of this private condominium and provide a historical overview of the architect’s, the project’s history and overview of the building’s unique architectural design gestures all experienced within the spaces themselves. Guests will be able to tour through the multi-storey galleria and experience the tropical style atrium and get an insider's view of one of the City’s most unique capital modern pieces of architecture.

Designing for Tomorrow's Downtown: A Community Wellbeing Workshop and Open House

Please join DIALOG for an interactive workshop as we explore the Community Wellbeing Framework as a tool to address a design challenge related to Edmonton’s Downtown Historic Warehouse District along 104 Street. The workshop will be followed by a studio Open House and networking opportunity.

About the Community Wellbeing Framework:

The Community Wellbeing Framework is an evidenced-based methodology to design for community wellbeing. The Framework is the result of a two-year collaborative research initiative between The Conference Board of Canada and DIALOG to study the relationship between the built environment and the wellbeing of people. Research findings for the Framework were informed by literature review, case study applications, consultation with health and design professionals across North America, and peer reviewed by researchers at Cornell University, Université Laval, and the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The Community Wellbeing Framework was designed to be an open-ended and self-determined guide for built environment design professionals. It provides easy-to-use approaches to examine design features that contribute to community wellbeing, and facilitates decision-making among owners and users of place (the community) to enable the place (the project) to contribute, and continue to contribute throughout its life, to the wellbeing of the community.

You also have the option to join us for an open house from 5-6pm following the workshop, no ticket required.

This event is an opportunity to bring together the Systemic Design eXchange (SDX) community of practice along with the MADE community to share, discover, and learn together. The event will include interactive activities that support the exploration of design approaches and applications across disciplines, discussion opportunities that support deepening relationships amongst participants, and time for unstructured networking.
